All Saints’ Day is a public holiday in Italy.
Italy marks All Saints’ Day – known in Italian as Ognissanti or Tutti i Santi – with a national public holiday on 1 November.
This year the holiday falls on a Saturday and is followed on 2 November by All Souls’ Day, a Catholic tradition of mourning the dearly departed.
In Italy this is a particularly important day, when people gather to visit family graves.
The capital’s three main cemeteries – Verano, Flaminio and Prima Porta – will be open on 1 and 2 November from 07.30-18.00. Buses serving these cemeteries will be increased from 22 October until 2 November.
The Non-Catholic Cemetery in the Testaccio district opens from 09.00-17.00, with last entry at 16.30.
Halloween, on 31 October, is still largely viewed as a foreign import in Italy where many see it as “non-Italian” and commercial, however the ghoulish festival is becoming increasingly popular among younger Italians.
