For the first time in aviation history, you can fly directly from the United States to Sardinia. Delta Air Lines launched its New York JFK to Olbia Costa Smeralda route on 20 May 2026, operating four times a week on a Boeing 767-300ER. Until two days ago, every American travelling to Sardinia had to connect through Rome, Milan or another European hub.The route was chosen through a public vote called the Route Race, in which Delta invited its SkyMiles members and employees to decide which new European destination would join its network. Sardinia, Malta and Ibiza were the three candidates. SkyMiles members chose Sardinia, Delta employees chose Malta. Nearly 150,000 votes were cast. Delta, in a rare act of corporate generosity, announced both would be added.Flights to Sardinia operate four times a week from JFK to Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport, with the journey taking just over eight hours. Fares range from approximately $750 to $1,000. The service runs through the summer tourist season until October. Silvio Pippobello, CEO of Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport, described the connection as “a historic and strategic milestone” for the island, opening new tourism and economic opportunities and strengthening Sardinia’s position in one of the world’s most important travel markets.
Why This Matters
Sardinia has long occupied a peculiar position in Mediterranean tourism: universally admired, frequently cited as one of Europe’s most beautiful destinations, and historically difficult to reach without a transfer. The Costa Smeralda in the island’s northeast has attracted wealthy international visitors for decades, but the absence of transatlantic connections meant that American travellers, for whom a layover in Rome or Milan added both time and cost, tended to prioritise other destinations.
Delta’s Senior Vice President of Network Planning Paul Baldoni described the expansion as designed to offer “unique and distinctive destinations chosen directly by our most loyal passengers,” a framing that reflects a broader trend among US carriers toward Mediterranean island routes as demand for experiential travel continues to grow.
The timing also reflects the so-called White Lotus effect: the HBO series, which filmed its third season in Sicily and generated an immediate spike in American interest in Italian island destinations, has made the Mediterranean island aesthetic one of the dominant aspirational travel trends in the US market.
For Sardinia, the direct Delta connection is more than a convenience. It is an acknowledgement of global status, the kind of route that signals to the international travel industry that a destination has graduated from regional gem to worldwide draw. The island’s tourism infrastructure, already stretched in peak season, will need to rise to meet what is likely to be a significant increase in American visitors over the coming years.
