Strategic infrastructure project aims to connect historic centre with northern districts.

Rome has officially launched the next phase of its underground transport expansion, with construction work commencing in the coming days on four new stations for the Metro C line.

This critical infrastructure project represents a significant step in the city’s long-term plan to modernise its public transit network and reduce surface traffic congestion.

The new development focuses on the so-called T2 section of the driverless Metro C line, extending the tracks from the current construction site at Piazza Venezia toward the north.

The four newly authorised stations are Chiesa Nuova, Piazza Pia, Ottaviano (including interchange with Metro A), and Mazzini.

The stations will be constructed by the Metro C consortium led by Webuild and Vianini Lavori.

“It’s been a very extensive project, but we’re finally getting started” – Rome mayor Roberto Gualtieri stated on Wednesday – “The actual work is scheduled to begin next Wednesday, 25 February. Finally, construction work on the T1 section, with the Auditorium and Farnesina stations, will begin by July.”

    Construction details

The Chiesa Nuova station will be located in the piazza of the same name along Corso Vittorio Emanuele II; it will be developed on six underground levels, created with an excavation of up to 43 metres from ground level. Construction work will involve the closure of Via Cerri, the temporary closure of access to Vicolo del Governo Vecchio, the relocation of the taxi area to Via Larga, the removal of the bus stop at Piazza della Chiesa Nuova towards Lungotevere, and the reversal of traffic on Via Sora, which will become one-way from Corso Vittorio to Via del Pellegrino.

The Piazza Pia station will be located under the gardens of Castel Sant’Angelo, and will be the deepest of the T2 section, with seven underground levels and an excavation depth that will reach about 48 meters below ground level, passing 25 metres under the lower level of the Tiber river bed. Access will be closed to the Castel Sant’Angelo gardens from Lungotevere Castello, on the Piazza Pia side, on Viale Giuseppe Ceccarelli.

The Ottaviano station will be located along Via Barletta, between Viale delle Milizie and Viale Giulio Cesare, and will constitute an important interchange hub with the existing station of the same name on Metro A. The project includes five underground levels, with an excavation depth of 35 metres from ground level.

The Mazzini station will be located in the Vittoria district, between Viale Giuseppe Mazzini, Via Monte Santo and Via Giunio Bazzoni. It will be developed on five underground levels, for an excavation depth of roughly 33 metres from ground level.

    Timeline and funding

Construction of the T1 stations, Auditorium and Farnesina, will begin by July 2026, once the assessment is completed and the related executive project is approved, the city said.

All the new stations – Chiesa Nuova, Piazza Pia/Castel Sant’Angelo, Ottaviano, Mazzini, Auditorium and Farnesina – are due to be completed 2037.

Overall, the Line C works on the sections beyond Venice are valued at over €3 billion and will extend the route by approximately 7 km, with six new stations.

This will bring the total number of stations on the Metro C – which currently travels from the eastern suburbs to the newly opened Colosseum station – up to 31.
