After a recent dog adoption drive, Rome turns its attention to cats.
Rome has launched a major public awareness campaign aimed at promoting the responsible adoption of cats from municipal cat shelters, the city said on Tuesday.
The adoption drive focuses on the Porta Portese feline oasis and five city-run gattili: Panda, Valle Grande, Mente Naturale, Casetta dei gatti and Azalea.
Rome’s environment councillor Sabrina Alfonsi launched the initiative, the first of its kind, which will run throughout December.
In addition to social media, the campaign will utilise various communication channels, from bus shelter screens to billboards, subway stations to adverts on radio stations.

The move follows a recent dog adoption campaign launched by the city, on the back of three million milk cartons, to help shelter dogs to find their forever home.
“This gesture not only represents an act of love and care for stray or abandoned cats by offering them a home and a family, but also contributes to improving the quality of life of the people who benefit from their companionship and the affection they provide”, Alfonsi stated.
She noted that the five municipal cat shelters can house 950 cats, noting that in 2024 there were 585 cats adopted and that up to August of this year there were 358 cats adopted, a figure she described as “encouraging”.
Alfonsi also took a moment to remember Daniele Petrucci – a key figure in Rome’s Torre Argentina cat sanctuary – whose “sudden and untimely passing saddens us deeply, because Daniele, with his passion and love for animals, was a true example for the entire world of volunteers committed to caring for Rome’s cats.”
