Eugenio Giani retains his seat as Tuscany governor.
Italy’s centre-left opposition on Monday celebrated the re-election of the outgoing governor of the Tuscany region, Eugenio Giani, in a widely predicted victory.
Giani, a member of the centre-left Partito Democratico (PD) party, was on track to win around 56 per cent of the vote, comfortably ahead of the expected 38 per cent of his main challenger, Pistoia mayor Alessandro Tomasi, of Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing Fratelli d’Italia party.
Antonella Bundu, a candidate supported by a left-wing electoral list called Toscana Rossa, was expected to take around five per cent of the vote.
PD leader Elly Schlein welcomed the re-election of Giani, 66, with a video post on social media of her hugging the victorious politician surrounded by applauding supporters.

In addition to the PD, Giani had the support of opposition parties Movimento 5 Stelle, Italia Viva, and the Alliance of the Greens and the Left (AVS).
Turnout in the two-day vote, held in 3,922 polling stations across the region, was the lowest ever recorded in Tuscany – 47.7 per cent – well below the 62.6 per cent registered in 2020.
Giani’s victory is a blow for the centre-right opposition, which had sought to wrest control of the central Italian region from the centre-left.
Meloni’s coalition governs 14 out of 20 Italian regions and has won several regional elections since coming to power three years ago, as well as losing to the centre-left in Sardinia, Umbria and Emilia-Romagna last year.
In recent weeks, Meloni celebrated the re-election of two centre-right regional governors: Francesco Acquaroli in Marche and Roberto Occhiuto in Calabria.
Next month will see further regional elections in Veneto – governed by the right-wing Lega, a coalition partner in Meloni’s government – and in the left-controlled regions of Campania and Puglia.
