Meloni and Salvini pay tribute to Trump as Israel and Hamas agree to first phase of Gaza peace plan.
Italy’s right-wing government on Thursday welcomed a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, brokered by US president Donald Trump, to end a two-year war in the Gaza Strip.
Trump said on Thursday that Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of his Gaza peace plan, following three days of intense talks in Egypt between Israel and Hamas.
In a statement, Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni said the agreement of the first phase of Trump’s peace plan is “extraordinary news, paving the way for a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all the hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli forces on agreed terms”.
Meloni thanked Trump for “having tirelessly sought an end to the conflict in Gaza, and the mediators – Egypt, Qatar and Türkiye – for their efforts”.
She pledged that Italy will “continue to support the mediators’ efforts and is ready to contribute to the stabilisation, reconstruction and development of Gaza”.

Deputy premier Matteo Salvini, who was recognised recently as “Israel’s best friend in Italy”, described it as “a beautiful, extraordinary, exciting day”.
“After so much talk and promises, after too many deaths, one can see the light at the end of the tunnel and there’s a concrete prospect of peace within reach, a ceasefire, the return of the hostages, alive or dead, to their families, the reconstruction of Gaza, the removal of Hamas terrorists”, Salvini said, claiming that if everything goes according to plan, Trump will “thoroughly deserve” to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
Salvini’s fellow deputy premier, foreign minister Antonio Tajani, said that Italy has “experienced companies” that could help in the reconstruction of Gaza, news agency ANSA reported.
Tajani also said that Italy would welcome in more sick Palestinian children, for treatment in Italian hospitals, and Palestinian students to study in Italian universities.
Writing on X, Italian defence minister Guido Crosetto said that “Italy, and in particular the armed forces, are and will be ready to do their part”, adding: “Italy is there and always will be, when it comes to helping and supporting peace processes”.
