Italy’s prime minister Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday said she has been accused of “complicity in genocide” in a complaint filed with the International Criminal Court (ICC) linking the Italian government to Israel’s war in Gaza.
Speaking on state television channel RAI 1, Meloni said that Italy’s defence minister Guido Crosetto and foreign minister Antonio Tajani had also been reported to the ICC amid accusations of complicity by supplying arms to Israel.
She added that Roberto Cingolani, the CEO of the weapons and aerospace firm Leonardo, may also have been included in the complaint.
Meloni did not provide any details about who had filed the report against her and her ministers, saying: “I don’t believe there is another case like this in the world or in history”.
The premier reiterated that Rome has not authorised any new arms shipments to Israel since 7 October 2023, claiming that Italy is among the European nations with “the most rigid stance” in this regard.
Expressing her concerns at “a climate that is becoming significantly more barbaric”, Meloni said she can no longer count the number of death threats she has received, claiming the responsibility lies with “those who say I have blood on my hands” in relation to Gaza.

Israel’s interception of a humanitarian flotilla attempting to deliver aid to Gaza sparked mass protests in Italy in recent days, with much of the anger directed at Meloni and her right-wing government.
A general strike called by the CGIL trade union last Friday in solidarity with the flotilla was deemed “specious” by Meloni who claimed that CGIL is “much more interested in defending the left than workers”.
Meloni spoke in two interviews on Tuesday evening, first on Cinque Minuti, then on Porta a Porta, both presented by veteran TV journalist Bruno Vespa.
In response to her remarks, Giuseppe Conte, leader of the opposition Movimento 5 Stelle, accused Meloni of failing to realise that “a genocide has been underway in Gaza for two years and that there is a famine being caused”, as well as failing to condemn Israel’s detention of Italians who travelled with the flotilla.
