Rome’s six tram lines to be replaced by free bus service.
Rome will take all trams out of circulation from Monday 6 October, replacing them with free shuttle buses until 7 December, as part of major works on the Tangenziale Est ring road.
The scaffolding being used for the maintenance works by road infrastructure company Anas will impede the use of the overhead power cables used by the trams, as well as disrupting traffic around Porta Maggiore, San Lorenzo and along Via Prenestina.
“The work will prevent trams from leaving the Porta Maggiore and Prenestina depots, as it will be necessary to disconnect the power lines, making it impossible to operate Rome’s six tram lines” – mobility councillor Eugenio Patanè stated – “However, we are taking this opportunity to upgrade four sections of the tramway infrastructure, bringing forward work that was originally scheduled for 2026.”
Patanè stressed that to minimise disruption to commuters, Rome’s public transport company ATAC will operate a completely free bus replacement for each tram line, “allowing us to maintain the same passenger capacity”.
Rome’s six tram lines – numbers 2, 3, 5, 8, 14 and 19 – will return to service on 8 December, a public holiday in Italy, coinciding with the opening of the new Metro C subway stations at the Colosseum and Porta Metronia.
