Since the start of last year, almost 200 seriously sick and wounded Gaza children have been evacuated to Italy for urgent medical care in Italian hospitals.
A special flight carrying a group of Palestinian students and researchers from the Gaza Strip is set to arrive in Rome on Wednesday, the Italian foreign ministry said.
The group comprises around 39 students and researchers, the recipients of scholarship programmes in Italian universities, along with about 30 Palestinian citizens who will arrive in Italy for family reunification.
Italian deputy premier and foreign minister Antonio Tajani will be at Rome’s Ciampino Airport to welcome the group, along with Italy’s university minister Anna Maria Bernini who travelled to Jordan to accompany the students on their journey to Italy.
The operation will see more than 70 Palestinians arrive in Italy from Amman, on two flights to Ciampino and Milan Linate.

On Monday a group of 15 sick children from Gaza, accompanied by their families and caregivers, arrived in Italy for medical treatment in Italian hospitals.
The group arrived on Italian air force flights to Ciampino, Lecce Galatina and Verona in the 15th medical evacuation conducted by Italy since January last year.
Among the patients is Tuleen, a newborn girl suffering from a serious congenital malformation, who will receive life-saving care at the Meyer hospital in Florence.
The foreign ministry said the latest medical evacuation brings to 196 the number of sick and wounded children from Gaza and their families (657 people in total) welcomed in Italy as part of the nation’s humanitarian efforts.
