Porta Metronia station to open on same day.
Rome’s Metro C subway station at the Colosseum will be inaugurated on 8 December, a national holiday in Italy, the city’s mayor Roberto Gualtieri said on Wednesday.
The preceding Metro C station at Porta Metronia will open on the same date in a move that brings Rome’s eastern suburbs closer to the heart of the city centre.
The opening date is of symbolic importance during the Jubilee Year: 8 December is a public day off for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. It also marks the start of the Christmas shopping season in Rome.
A key feature of the two new metro stations will be the display of ancient artefacts discovered during excavations.
In recent months the Metro C construction site on Via dei Fori Imperiali has been dismantled, with the two entrances of the new Colosseo metro station, on either side of the street, sealed off.

The driverless 19-km Metro C line currently comprises 22 stations and runs from Pantono in east Rome to San Giovanni where it connects with Metro A and the central Termini train station.
With the opening of the Colosseo station, Metro C will connect with Metro B.
Construction on the Metro C subway station at Piazza Venezia in a massive infrastructure scheme set to last about a decade.
Since it started more than three decades ago, the Metro C project has been beset with difficulties, from massive funding overspends to lengthy delays due to red tape and archaeological discoveries.
In July Rome received the definitive green light for the final design of the T2 section of the Metro C line, which includes the construction of four new subway stations.
