General strike for Gaza leads to travel chaos in Italy.
Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets in Rome and cities across Italy on Monday amid a general strike to express solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
Those participating in the protests and rallies around Italy included pro-Palestinian groups, trade unions, students, associations and ordinary citizens, young and old.
An estimated 20,000 people gathered outside Rome’s central Termini train station, which shut its doors, with protests elsewhere in the capital leading to traffic gridlock.
In Milan thousands of people marched from Piazzale Cadorna, led by representatives of the CUB union, under banners that read: “We will block everything, stop the genocide”.
Protesters in Naples blocked trains in the city’s central station by occupying railway tracks, while thousands of people blocked traffic on the A1 motorway at Calenzano near Florence.
Other sit-ins and demonstrations were planned in Genoa, Turin, Bologna, Florence, Bari and Palermo.
The 24-hour general strike, involving the public and private sectors, was called by four trade unions “against the genocide in Palestine” and the “supply of weapons to Israel”.
The strike, which also called for “unconditional support” for the Global Sumud Flotilla, is causing widespread disruption to public transport services, schools, universities, ports and factories across Italy.
