Rome bus caught fire as it returned to depot.
An investigation is under way after a bus operated by Rome’s municipal public transport company ATAC burst into flames in the northern Fleming district of the capital on Tuesday.
There was nobody injured in the incident which occurred at 12.30 as the out-of-service bus was travelling along Via Flaminia Nuova, without passengers.
Firefighters put out the blaze and police temporarily closed off the area to traffic.
The 12-metre bus destroyed in the fire had been in service since 2013, ATAC said in a statement, stressing: “The event had no consequences for anyone and only affected the vehicle.”

City buses in Rome are known to catch fire, a phenomenon known ironically by Romans as ‘Flambus’, with poor maintenance and ageing vehicles cited among the factors.
The most recent incident occurred three weeks ago when a hybrid bus, in service for just one year, was engulfed in flames as it travelled along Via Prenestina.
