Trenitalia seeks to reduce number of abandoned dogs over holidays.
Dogs and cats can travel with their owners free of charge on Italy’s Frecce and Intercity long-distance trains this summer, Trenitalia has announced.
The initiative – in place from 21 June until 15 September 2025 – is part of efforts by Trenitalia to reduce the phenomenon of people abandoning their pets as they head off on summer holidays.
In order to travel with dogs on Trenitalia trains, travellers must carry the animal’s certificate of registration and health booklet, or alternatively – for foreign citizens – the dog’s passport.
Dogs must also be kept on a leash and equipped with a muzzle.
When purchasing a ticket on the Trenitalia website and app, before paying, select the “Viaggia con il tuo cane” service.
Guide dogs for blind people always travel free of charge on all Trenitalia trains, as do small dogs and cats transported in a pet carrier up to a maximum size of 70 x 30 x 50 cm.
