Zohran Mamdani Channels Super Mario’s Philosophy to Set Tone for Hosting 2026 Tournament
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani caught everyone by surprise on 5 June when, during a press conference on logistics and transportation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he cited Mario Balotelli to explain his administration’s approach to hosting the tournament. Mamdani, a self-described football fanatic who supports Arsenal and has played defender in an amateur Brooklyn team, was describing preparations for a World Cup that kicks off on 11 June and concludes with a final at MetLife Stadium on 19 July.
Mamdani called Balotelli, now 35 and playing in the UAE, “one of the greatest strikers in recent memory,” then invoked the Italian’s famous philosophy on goal celebrations. “When I score, I don’t celebrate because I’m only doing my job,” Mamdani quoted. “When a postman delivers letters, does he celebrate?”
The Mayor then applied the logic directly to New York’s hosting responsibilities. “When New York hosts a World Cup that is well-organised, safe, and runs smoothly and seamlessly, will we celebrate? No, because we will only be doing our job.”
The philosophy served as a counterpoint to complacency. Mamdani was not arguing for passivity but for the expectation that excellence is the baseline, not the goal. He reinforced this by also referencing José Mourinho’s famous phrase about “parking the bus,” assuring that New York would not be defensive or minimal in its approach but would pursue genuine excellence in infrastructure, services and security.
Mamdani’s invocation of a footballer’s wisdom in the context of municipal governance drew attention on social media, particularly in Italy, where Balotelli’s quote has become something of a cultural reference point for the philosophy of unshowy competence and duty.
