The annual Via Crucis or Way of the Cross ceremony\u00a0is scheduled to take place at the Colosseum in Rome on Good Friday, 3 April,\u00a0at 21.15.<\/p>\n
The torchlit procession\u00a0– which dates to the 18th century and was revived in 1964 –\u00a0attracts thousands of faithful who listen to meditations re-enacting Christ’s crucifixion.<\/p>\n
This year’s Via Crucis will be the first to be presided over by Pope Leo XIV, following the death of his predecessor Pope Francis\u00a0on Easter Monday\u00a02025.<\/p>\n
There are no tickets required for solemn event which is part of the Vatican’s liturgical programme for Holy Week or\u00a0Settimana Santa<\/em>, and which\u00a0will result in the\u00a0early closure\u00a0of the Colosseum.<\/p>\n The\u00a0ceremony\u00a0will lead to road closures and\u00a0traffic restrictions\u00a0in the area around the Colosseum as well as the closure of the Colosseo\u00a0subway station from 14.00.<\/p>\n Those who wish to reach the area on the Metro B line should get out at\u00a0the Circo Massimo or Cavour stops.<\/p>\n The Via Crucis will be broadcast live by Italian television channel RAI Uno and live-streamed by\u00a0Vatican Media.<\/p>\n Cover image: Via Crucis at the Colosseum in 2019.
