{"id":45092,"date":"2026-02-04T08:24:55","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T07:24:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/polinex.cluster021.hosting.ovh.net\/index.php\/2026\/02\/04\/carnevale-romano-the-story-of-romes-carnival\/"},"modified":"2026-02-04T08:24:55","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T07:24:55","slug":"carnevale-romano-the-story-of-romes-carnival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/polinex.cluster021.hosting.ovh.net\/index.php\/2026\/02\/04\/carnevale-romano-the-story-of-romes-carnival\/","title":{"rendered":"Carnevale Romano: The Story of Rome&#8217;s Carnival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Tracing the origins and history of Rome&#8217;s carnival<\/strong>.<\/h2>\n<p>The first certain traces of Rome&#8217;s carnival celebrations\u00a0date back to the 12th century.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong><em>ludus carnevalarii<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0saw the attendance of the pope since 1143, with events based in the fields below Monte dei Cocci in Testaccio.<\/p>\n<p>Festivities included\u00a0<strong>duels and bullfights<\/strong>, attended by noble families as well as ordinary citizens of Rome, keen to witness the wild events as well as take advantage of the meat from the slain animals.<\/p>\n<p>Rome&#8217;s <strong>carnevale festivities<\/strong> were later moved into the city centre to venues such as St Peter&#8217;s, Piazza Farnese and &#8211; in particular &#8211; Piazza Navona.<\/p>\n<p>However it was with the arrival of the flamboyant <strong>Pope Paul II<\/strong> in 1464 &#8211; and his move to live at Palazzo San Marco near Piazza Venezia &#8211; that Rome&#8217;s carnival really took off.<\/p>\n<p>Festivities were based in the centre with races being held along Via Lata &#8211; today Via del Corso &#8211; with categories including children, elderly, <strong>donkeys and buffaloes<\/strong>, all competing for handsome prize money.<\/p>\n<p>Over the centuries the carnival had its ups and downs, all depending on the scruples of the reigning pope: some pontiffs allowed Romans to <strong>revel in excess<\/strong>, others repressed the festivities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pope Alexander VI Borgia<\/strong>, who enjoyed Carnevale immensely, established a special<strong> race for prostitutes<\/strong> in 1501.<\/p>\n<h3>Berber horse race<\/h3>\n<p>Two Carnevale events were particularly popular: the inaugural parade and the race of the <strong>Berber horses<\/strong>, both based in Piazza del Popolo and along Via del Corso.<\/p>\n<p>In the days preceding these events noble families would display their splendid carriages, <strong>throwing flowers and sugared almonds<\/strong> to the assembled crowds.<\/p>\n<p>The pope attended the inaugural parade, in a pomp-filled procession designed to show his power.<\/p>\n<p>However the most anticipated event of the Carnevale Romano was the race of the Berber horses, a <strong>wild and dangerous spectacle<\/strong> along Via del Corso, where crowds celebrated with <strong>colourful masks<\/strong> and <strong>extravagant fireworks displays<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Berber horse race was abolished in 1874 by <strong>King Victor Emmanuel II<\/strong> due to the death of a spectator, resulting in Rome&#8217;s carnival celebrations falling into oblivion for over a century, until their revival in recent years.<\/p>\n<h3>Carnival 2026: key dates<\/h3>\n<p>This year&#8217;s carnevale season begins officially on <strong>31 January<\/strong>\u00a0and will continue until <strong>17 February<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>During this time it is common to see children in Rome dressed up in fancy costumes and throwing colourful confetti, with bakery windows full of special carnival treats such as<strong> frappe <\/strong>and<strong> castagnole<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Key dates on the 2026 carnevale calendar are <strong>12 February<\/strong> (Gioved\u00ec Grasso), <strong>15 February<\/strong>\u00a0(domenica di Carnevale) and <strong>17 February<\/strong>\u00a0(Marted\u00ec Grasso).<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally carnival is the period of <strong>fun and festivities<\/strong> preceding the 40 days of fasting and prayer that Christians observe during Lent, which begins this year on 18 February, with <strong>Ash Wednesday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Article first published 12 February 2020, updated and republished 4 February 2026.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tracing the origins and history of Rome&#8217;s carnival.
