{"id":45078,"date":"2026-02-03T15:05:27","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T14:05:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/polinex.cluster021.hosting.ovh.net\/index.php\/2026\/02\/03\/irish-women-bring-all-female-art-project-to-rome\/"},"modified":"2026-02-03T15:05:27","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T14:05:27","slug":"irish-women-bring-all-female-art-project-to-rome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/polinex.cluster021.hosting.ovh.net\/index.php\/2026\/02\/03\/irish-women-bring-all-female-art-project-to-rome\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish women bring all-female art project to Rome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong><em>The School of Hibernia<\/em> comes to Rome for St Brigid&#8217;s Day<\/strong>.<\/h2>\n<p>An ambitious art project titled\u00a0<em>The School of Hibernia<\/em>, described as an Irish all-female reboot of Raphael\u2019s School of Athens fresco, was presented in Rome on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The event, which comprised a symposium and a screening, was held with the support of the\u00a0<strong>Embassy of Ireland to Italy<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Ireland-Italy Projects<\/strong>, as part of celebrations to mark St Brigid&#8217;s Day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Na Cailleacha<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Created by the art collective\u00a0Na Cailleacha, the project is a full-scale, all-female re-enactment of Raphael\u2019s High Renaissance masterpiece, in a tableau that was staged in the Museum Building in Trinity College Dublin.<\/p>\n<p>The work features\u00a0<strong>41 influential Irish women<\/strong>, including former president\u00a0<strong>Mary Robinson<\/strong>\u00a0and Trinity provost\u00a0<strong>Linda Doyle<\/strong>, purposefully replacing the original male philosophers to challenge patriarchal standards in art and education.<\/p>\n<p>The eight members of Na Cailleacha &#8211; an Irish term for &#8220;witches&#8221;, &#8220;divine hags&#8221; or &#8220;wise women&#8221;\u00a0&#8211; consist of six visual artists, a jazz musician and a curator\/writer who\u00a0joined forces to explore being female and being older creatives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Symposium and screening<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The symposium, held in the crypt of St Brigid\u2019s Church in Piazza Farnese, featured illustrious speakers including <strong>Caroline Campbell<\/strong>, director of the National Gallery of Ireland, and Professor <strong>Arnold Nesselrath<\/strong>, formerly of the Vatican Museums.<\/p>\n<p>The event concluded with the\u00a0screening of <strong><em>Rootstock<\/em><\/strong>, a documentary by Therry Rudin detailing the creation of the tableau, at Cinema Farnese in Campo de&#8217; Fiori.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;St. Brigid\u2019s Day is a wonderful opportunity to highlight and celebrate the many achievements of women in Ireland and around the world&#8221; &#8211; <strong>Ambassador of Ireland to Italy<\/strong>, <strong>Elizabeth McCullough<\/strong>, stated, hailing the Rome event\u00a0offered the chance &#8220;to reflect on the significant progress attained since The School of Athens was created, and the important work that remains to ensure full equality for women in today\u2019s world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ireland-Italy Projects was founded by <strong>Brenda Moore-McCan<\/strong>n and <strong>Jane Adams<\/strong> in 2024 to promote cultural exchange between Ireland and Italy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>St Brigid&#8217;s Day<\/strong>, celebrated on 1 February, became Ireland&#8217;s newest public holiday in 2023 to honour the country&#8217;s female patron saint and the beginning of spring.<\/p>\n<p><em>Photo: The School of Hibernia (after Raphael). 2024.
