Meloni, leader of the right-wing Fratelli d’Italia party, condemned the “complicity” of Italy’s wartime fascist regime in the persecution and deportation of Jewish citizens, deploring “the ignominy of\u00a0the racial laws\u00a0of 1938”.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
“On Holocaust Remembrance Day, we remember the names and surnames of the victims and renew the memory of what happened, also through the precious testimony of survivors and their descendants”, Meloni said in\u00a0a statement.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
The prime minister also condemned a recent rise in antisemitism, describing it as “a disease that has returned to spread, in new and virulent forms” and reaffirming a commitment to “prevent and combat every aspect of this scourge”.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
The statement from Meloni comes amid\u00a0a controversy over a new miniseries\u00a0which allegedly erases the role of Italian fascist collaborators in the Nazi raid on Rome’s Jewish Ghetto in 1943.<\/p>\n
