{"id":44276,"date":"2025-11-27T12:45:29","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T11:45:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/polinex.cluster021.hosting.ovh.net\/index.php\/2025\/11\/27\/rome-to-light-up-christmas-tree-on-8-december\/"},"modified":"2025-11-27T12:45:29","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T11:45:29","slug":"rome-to-light-up-christmas-tree-on-8-december","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/polinex.cluster021.hosting.ovh.net\/index.php\/2025\/11\/27\/rome-to-light-up-christmas-tree-on-8-december\/","title":{"rendered":"Rome to light up Christmas tree on 8 December"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Rome to install Christmas tree in Piazza del Popolo for third year in a row<\/strong>.<\/h2>\n<p>Rome&#8217;s Christmas tree, which returns to its\u00a0new location\u00a0of Piazza del Popolo for the third year in a row,\u00a0will be illuminated on the evening of Monday 8 December.<\/p>\n<p>The 20-metre high\u00a0fir tree from Como in northern Italy will be illuminated on\u00a0the\u00a0Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a\u00a0public holiday in Italy.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas lights along the central Via del Corso will be switched on at the same time, in a popular Roman tradition.<\/p>\n<p>Rome\u2019s Christmas tree in Piazza del Popolo <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/K0UgvG5bJe\" title=\"pic.twitter.com\/K0UgvG5bJe\">pic.twitter.com\/K0UgvG5bJe<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Wanted in Rome (@wantedinrome) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wantedinrome\/status\/1862604029307609600?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" title=\"November 29, 2024\">November 29, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Christmas tree\u00a0cost\u00a0almost \u20ac127,000 and was financed with the support of Jubilee funds, the city said.<\/p>\n<p>It will remain in place until 8 January 2026 before being taken down the next day.<\/p>\n<p>Rome&#8217;s\u00a0Christmas tree left behind its traditional base in Piazza Venezia in 2023 due to major works for the\u00a0Metro C subway station, part\u00a0of a\u00a0\u20ac700 million project\u00a0set to last about\u00a0a decade.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Vatican&#8217;s Christmas tree,\u00a0a 27-metre-high spruce tree from the Ultimo valley in Bolzano, will be\u00a0lit up in St Peter&#8217;s Square on Saturday 6 December.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spelacchio<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2017 Rome&#8217;s Christmas tree was\u00a0christened &#8220;Spelacchio&#8221;\u00a0due to the &#8216;mangy&#8217; specimen whose threadbare branches drew negative news headlines in Italy and around the world.<\/p>\n<p>After the initial outrage over the tree, which was compared unfavourably to a toilet brush, Spelacchio won the hearts of Romans who festooned it with ironic messages of affection and sympathy.<\/p>\n<p>Many Rome residents would agree however that Spelacchio was not the city&#8217;s worst Christmas tree of all time, reserving that dubious honour for the\u00a0white, artificial Christmas tree\u00a0installed by former mayor Gianni Alemanno in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The short-lived tree was removed within hours but not before a Rome politician captured the general mood by calling it \u201cthe epitome of bad taste\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018 and 2019 the\u00a0US streaming giant\u00a0Netflix sponsored the city&#8217;s Christmas tree, however\u00a0since then the city has picked up the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Up until 10 years ago Rome had two giant Christmas trees: one in Piazza Venezia and one in front of the Colosseum.<\/p>\n<p>However the custom of the Colosseum tree was axed on cost-cutting grounds by former mayor Virginia Raggi.<\/p>\n<p><em>Image: Christmas tree in Piazza del Popolo, 2023.
