Rome’s Metro C subway station at the Colosseum will be inaugurated on 8 December, a national holiday in\u00a0Italy, the city’s mayor Roberto Gualtieri said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The preceding Metro C station at Porta Metronia\u00a0will open\u00a0on the same date in a move that brings Rome’s eastern suburbs closer to the heart of the city centre.<\/p>\n
The opening date is of symbolic importance during the Jubilee Year: 8 December is a public day off for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. It also marks the start of the Christmas shopping season in Rome.<\/p>\n
A key feature of the two new metro stations will be the display of ancient artefacts\u00a0discovered during excavations.<\/p>\n
In recent months the Metro C construction site on Via dei Fori Imperiali has been dismantled, with the two entrances of the new Colosseo metro station, on either side of the street, sealed off.<\/p>\n
