Rome is blessed with\u00a0more than 2,500 drinking fountains, known as nasoni<\/em>, which provide residents and visitors with free fresh water all year round.<\/p>\n Why are Rome’s\u00a0drinking fountains called nasoni<\/em><\/strong>?<\/p>\n The iconic fountains\u00a0get their nasoni<\/em> (“big nose”) name from the curved metal spout which pours cool fresh water round the clock.<\/p>\n What is the history of Rome’s nasoni<\/em> fountains<\/strong>?<\/p>\n The nasoni<\/em>, also known as\u00a0fontanelle<\/em>,\u00a0were first introduced in the early 1870s when the new capital began providing free water for its citizens.<\/p>\n At the peak of their popularity there were around 5,000\u00a0nasoni<\/em>\u00a0in Rome but this number has dwindled to roughly between 2,500 and 2,800.<\/p>\n Why do the nasoni<\/em> fountains run all the time<\/strong>?<\/p>\n In addition to their benefit in offering refreshing free water, the constantly-running nasoni<\/em> keep the water from stagnating in pipes.<\/p>\n Can dogs drink from the nasoni<\/em><\/strong>?<\/p>\n Rome’s much-loved fountains have a little basin at the base, designed specially for dogs. Besides being free, the water in the nasoni<\/em> is the same acqua potabile<\/em> that flows into Roman homes, meaning it is totally safe to drink.<\/p>\n Are the fountains ever turned off<\/strong>?<\/p>\n No – apart from\u00a0a severe drought in 2017 when many of the city’s\u00a0nasoni<\/em> were switched off or reduced to a trickle to preserve water supplies, but this was in exceptional circumstances. Normally the fountains run all the time, night and day, all year round.<\/p>\n This curious drinking fountain with three dragon heads is one of just three of the original \u2018nasoni\u2019 fountains from the 1870s that survive in Rome today.
