Besides being free, the water in the <em>nasoni<\/em> is the same <em>acqua potabile<\/em> that flows into Roman homes, meaning it is totally safe to drink.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are the fountains ever turned off<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>No &#8211; apart from\u00a0a severe drought in 2017 when many of the city&#8217;s\u00a0<em>nasoni<\/em> were switched off or reduced to a trickle to preserve water supplies, but this was in exceptional circumstances. Normally the fountains run all the time, night and day, all year round.<\/p>\n<p>This curious drinking fountain with three dragon heads is one of just three of the original \u2018nasoni\u2019 fountains from the 1870s that survive in Rome today. This one is on Via di San Teodoro near the Roman Forum.
