Strike set to result in travel disruption to Italy’s high-speed rail network.
Italy’s high-speed rail sector faces disruption on Wednesday 11 March due to a nationwide strike by personnel of the private train operator Italo.
The industrial action, sheduled to start at 09.01 and end at 16.59, “may lead to changes to service, including before and after its conclusion”, according to a statement issued by state rail company Rete Ferroviaria Italiana.
The walkout, called by the Uilt-Uil transport union, stems from ongoing disputes regarding the renewal of national collective labour contracts and calls for improved working conditions and heightened safety protocols for onboard and station staff.
Passengers planning to travel on the Italo network on Wednesday should anticipate cancellations and delays.
Travellers are advised to consult the list of guaranteed trains published on Italo’s website to confirm the status of their journeys.
Italo also invites customers to call its toll-free number 060708 for travel information.
With the high-speed network serving as a critical artery for business and tourism between major hubs such as Milan, Rome and Naples, Wednesday’s strike by Italo staff is expected to put additional strain on Trenitalia rail services and domestic flights.
While Italian law mandates the provision of guaranteed services during peak commuting hours on weekdays – between 06.00 and 09.00 and again from 18.00 to 21.00 – scheduled train departures outside these windows remain at risk of cancellation.
