From Olympic Glory to Emergency Surgery: The Remarkable Resilience of Lindsey Vonn.

At 41, Lindsey Vonn returned from retirement to chase Olympic glory one final time. What happened on that Italian slope, and in the operating theatres that followed, became something far bigger than sport.

The world experienced 13 seconds of American Olympic alpine ski racer Lindsey Vonn racing in the women’s downhill until deafening screams filled the winter air, leaving in-person spectators mouths agape and online watchers searching for answers. Loud roaring blades from the emergency helicopter answered unspoken questions, while fans prayed for a fast recovery for the skier.

    A Career Defined by Comebacks

Some would say this injury marked a career turner for Vonn. Others could argue her decision to retire back in February of 2019, after medaling three times in the Olympics, was the initial career ender. Vonn came out of retirement in late 2024 to compete with the U.S. Ski Team in the 2025-26 season, finishing with an outstanding victory in the World Cup downhill. However, she sustained a torn ACL before heading to Milan and Cortina for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The Crash and the Six-Hour Surgery That Saved Her Leg

In the initial moments after Vonn’s crash, Team USA Doctor Tom Hackett performed a six-hour surgery to prevent amputation to her leg. Italian doctors worked on Vonn for almost two weeks, undergoing three more surgeries before she was transferred to a hospital in Colorado for another. Her injuries were extensive, including a complex tibia fracture, a fracture of her fibula head and her tibial plateau. Vonn currently sits in a wheelchair, hoping for crutches after her right ankle, which broke in the crash, fully heals.

“It’s been quite the journey and by far the most extreme and painful and challenging injury I’ve ever faced in my life, times 100.”

Vonn posted a video to Instagram stating: “If I hadn’t torn my ACL, which I would have torn anyways with this crash; if I hadn’t done that, Tom wouldn’t have been there. He wouldn’t have been able to save my leg. I feel very lucky and grateful for him.”

The Italian Doctors Who Worked in the Shadows

Vonn made only a brief mention of the Italian doctors in her video posted on February 23, despite the countless hours they dedicated to her surgeries.

“I want to say thank you to Tom and all the medical staff in Italy and Colorado that helped take care of me.”

While her acknowledgment to the team of Italian doctors was brief, it underscored the crucial role the international medical staff played during her surgeries. Their long hours behind the scenes were instrumental in leading Vonn to her long road of recovery.

It Took a Village to Rebuild a Champion

Vonn uploaded a video to her Instagram narrated by Dr. Hackett, describing her injuries whilst showing how many doctors it takes to repair a severe injury like Vonn’s. The USA medical team helped her along her long journey of physical therapy to get her back on the slopes after retirement and following her torn ACL. From Hackett’s perspective, her comeback was not filled with pure luck. It was the result of a medical team that quite literally rebuilt her body.

“Crashes aren’t failures, they’re proof you showed up and put it all on the line, cause it takes heart to build bodies that break records.”

At 41 years old, Lindsey Vonn proved her return defied odds, pushed resilience and demonstrated that it requires a village to turn devastating injuries into a feeling of hope.

Support Pours In from Around the World

Vonn’s road to recovery will be a personal struggle, one she has gained support for from thousands upon thousands of people, including famous football players Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“The mountains you conquered were never bigger than the strength you carry. Keep fighting. Legends always rise.”
