Rome’s vigili urbani to manage traffic during the Olympics in Cortina.
Rome is to send around 50 traffic police officers to Cortina d’Ampezzo in northern Italy for the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympic Games and Winter Paralympic Games.
The Italian capital is sending three contingents of vigili urbani to manage the traffic, following an agreement between authorities in the capital and the ski resort, La Repubblica newspaper reports.
The move follows a request for back-up from Cortina for the two sets of Winter Olympics and Paralympics, scheduled respectively on 6-22 February and 6-15 March.
Organisers of the event will pay the Roman vigili, as well as covering their travel expenses, food and accommodation, La Repubblica reports.
The three contingents will comprise groups of 16 officers, including two heads of department, and will be deployed on three separate periods of about 12 days each.
The vigili will be required to work three hours of overtime each day on top of their regular six-hour shift, and will receive “an external service allowance of €15 per day”, according to La Repubblica.
Applications must be received by 13 January and eligible officers will be selected by Rome’s Polizia Locale commander Mario De Sclavis, with the approval of unions.
