Rome set to confirm Trevi Fountain entry fee in the coming days.
Tourists visiting the Trevi Fountain could soon be charged to see the iconic Rome landmark as the city moves forward with a contentious plan to introduce an entry fee.
The news was announced on Tuesday by newspaper Corriere della Sera which reported that the ticket will cost €2, while admission will remain free for Rome residents.
The press office of Rome tourism councillor Alessandro Onorato confirmed that changes were afoot but clarified that “this is only a working hypothesis that the city administration, as is well known, has been considering for some time”, adding that “no dates have been set, nor have any decisions been made.”
The start date of the proposed entry fee system to visit the Baroque fountain is to be set during a meeting to be held later this week, with an official announcement expected before Christmas.
The date reported by the Corriere is 7 January – the day after a public holiday in Italy which marks the end of the Christmas holidays – however this is yet to be confirmed.
Once introduced, the entry fee will only apply to tourists – not Rome residents – and according to city hall estimates the move should generate an annual treasure chest of around €20 million for the capital.
Last summer, Corriere della Sera reported that the entry fee was set to be introduced in September 2025 – one year after the plan was first mooted by Onorato, however the move didn’t come to pass.
The entry fee plan – designed to safeguard the fountain and reduce unmanageable crowds while raising funds for the upkeep of Rome’s artistic heritage – has the support of mayor Roberto Gualtieri who has described it as “a very concrete idea”.
Late last year, following the completion of maintenance works, the city introduced a queuing system at the famed fountain which is open to 400 visitors at a time.
This entry scheme is in operation from 09.00 until 21.00 every day except on Monday and Friday when it opens at 11.00 to allow for the collection of coins, with open access after 21.00.
