New one-way system to remain in place until 2031 as Metro C station construction site moves to opposite side of Piazza Venezia.
Rome introduced a new one-way traffic system in Piazza Venezia on Sunday 16 September to facilitate works for the Metro C subway station.
The new system, to remain in effect until 2031, will see traffic move to the Palazzo Venezia side of the square, while the construction site shifts to the opposite side of the piazza, outside the Generali building.
From Sunday, traffic will be channelled through four new lanes outside Palazzo Venezia in the direction of Via Cesare Battisti, Piazza San Marco, Via di San Venanzio, Piazza dell’Aracoeli, and Piazza Santi Apostoli, the city said in a statement.
The four-lane one-way system will allow traffic to reach Via del Corso or Via Cesare Battisti on the right, and Via del Plebiscito on the left.
“Traffic coming from Via Cesare Battisti and Via del Corso towards Piazza dell’Aracoeli and Via del Teatro di Marcello must use Via del Plebiscito and Via d’Aracoeli” – the city said – “Vehicles coming from Via del Teatro di Marcello towards Via del Plebiscito, Via del Corso and Via Cesare Battisti may continue to pass through Piazza Venezia.”
At least 20 traffic police officers will be active in Piazza Venezia at any one time for the first two weeks of the new system, which will also see the modification of various city bus routes.
The construction site, which began in 2023, is proceeding “on schedule”, Rome mayor Roberto Gualtieri said, noting that the 10-year subway station project is scheduled for completion in September 2033.
